David’s ambitious mind planned for a long time a new project with up to 25 artists invited. The first episode from this pharaonic series of songs releases in March 2018 with WATER’S EDGE Ep. A six tracks disc involving nine musicians. It is announced as the opening of the POOLSIDE double LP planned for 2020. 6 songs with high profile vocal invitations including the poetry of the UK writer Karen Luke, Valli the half of the legendary French duo “Chagrin d’Amour” and Awa Sy who showed her talent to millions of French people through her The Voice appearance. "Water’s Edge (feat. Karen Luke)" was selected by French Radio FIP to be part of its "Discothèque Idéale Electro" compiling 25 years of their musical crushes. Evolving between Drum and Bass, Electronica and NuJazz, this EP definitely opens the way to a promising sequel. David Federmann is a French Jazz musician and studio producer. He was born and raised in Strasbourg and now lives in Paris. He is a self-taught artist and plays many instruments but is best known for his talent as a pianist and a composer. David attributes his musical sense to his early involvement in jazz clubs and his affinity for jam sessions that began at the age of 13. Between Strasbourg - his hometown - and Paris, he has met hundreds of musicians on stage, adapting his sound according to their styles and creating new musical alchemies every night. David is also a skilled sound engineer who is often hired by radio and TV production companies. When he moves from live performance into the studio, he seeks sonic perfection, blending his workmanship of advanced technology with his love for jazz. In 2013, when David brought together the best musicians he had played with on a big studio project, VMAJ7 was born. More than just a record label, VMAJ7 is a collective of 30 musicians. The first collaborative album was awarded at the GRAND PRIX SACEM 2014. David Federmann is the son of Jazz Clubs as a live performer. But after years of experience in composition and mixing, he now considers studio creation as a unique musical practice. Thanks to his knowledge of studio techniques, he became a WAVES & LANDR since 2017. His influences: From the Miles Davis Be-Bop of the 50s, to the George Benson Jazz-Funk genre of the 70s, David has a thirst for soul-jazzy-pop from the 80s that can only be quenched by classics such as Michael Jackson’s releases produced by Quincy Jones. David also takes his musical inspiration from Rap/Acid Jazz of the 90s, such as A Tribe Called Quest, Guru & the Jazzmatazz, and MC Solaar. What’s more, his discovery of Future Jazz/Broken Beat tracks in the early 2000s / Jazzanova, St Germain, Kyoto Jazz Massive, 4 Hero and Nicola Conte were game-changers for him. Heir to this rich heritage, David Federmann is constantly renewing the art of mixing Jazz codes with Modern Urban Music styles and is always surrounded by the most talented musicians and singers from the French Jazz scene. Karen Burke Every track has its story and its encounters. The title WATERS EDGE was born from a September evening in Belleville (a famous popular district of Paris). The weather is nice. I’m going to meet some friends on the terrace of a cafe. They tell me when I arrive that the service is done inside the bar. As soon as I get into the cafe, I see a crowd of Americans and English people very excited. It is an OPEN MIC evening standing there. There are singers, comedians... I’ll stay a moment and take the time to listen. At one point a very shy-tall-English-girl goes on stage. In contrast to the very excited atmosphere in the room, this girl begins to claim a poem, in a soft and barely perceptible voice. It's filled with melancholy. This is Karen Luke. I understand that she is mourning a lost love. And she is doing that in public. I find the attitude very beautiful because it is out of step with the situation. It is courageous. As soon as she's going off the stage, I immediately come to find her and tell her how "badly" I’ve been moved. I talk to her about my collaborative album project and suggest that we might record her poem into a song. She accepts without any hesitations. The song was accomplished 4 days after. WATER’S EDGE’s video music is also the result of a meeting. The meeting of the Swiss director Samuel Perriard who I met in Montpellier shortly after the Belleville meeting. We are on a sunny terrace on top of a building. I make him listen to the song then freshly finished. He tells me about his city of Zurich in Switzerland. Its urban poetry, cold and melancholic during the winter. The project was underway. [Lyrics] He has gone Heaviness lifts like mist On a crisp, spring morning, Letting light lengthen Into the corners of the room. Time returns with thoughts That bounce along the lily pads, Laughing and skipping, Singing and dancing, As a butterfly rests its wings I breathe In and out, to and fro, The balloon bobs in the air, Shaking loose the leaves That quiver and fall into the water. He has taken the road Long and lonely, it winds, relentless. Wretched, it stretches, Deeper and darker, Wider then narrower, Long and lonely, On and on. The water ripples Winds whisper the season’s changing clime, Thinning the branches Thickening the gorse, As the butterfly disappears. He's out the other side The beaten track burning The place where the rivers merge, spin That mountain That ocean That city where the lights dance, sing The rhythm of a different beat. Winter's in the water A dance in ice laced with snow Freezing that taste of where your thoughts go Along the valley And up the spine Within, without The bracken, the vine The white carpet cakes the heath Now I can see this, Now he has gone. I breathe In and out, to and fro, The balloon bobs in the air, Shaking loose the leaves That quiver and fall into the water. He has taken the road Long and lonely, it winds, relentless. Wretched, it stretches, Deeper and darker, Wider then narrower, Long and lonely, On and on. That mountain That ocean That city Where the lights dance... 02. Chloé Traband, David Federmann I go to my local barber in Gambetta (the district I live in Paris), held by an old Algerian 75-80 years old. All the old men of the district meet there every day / a real tea room, where I have been going for years. While I am having my hair cut, I talk about a future trip to Stockholm with my girlfriend. And at that precise moment, one of the "grandpa" present in the room suddenly stands up and say: "Stockholm ! I know Stockholm ! I've been there many times in my life." 5 minutes pass and this same old man hands me his business card of 1965 with a name inscribed on it. "That's the name of my sweetheart at the time. I'd like you to find her to tell him I'm sorry." And from there comes the video music! With his business card (1965!) As a unique vector object, the investigation takes us to Stockholm to try to find his old love. The video is shot in Paris, in the neighborhood hairdresser, and in Stockholm. This is the true story of Ahmed Hayoube. Ahmed (whom everyone calls "Hayoube") also is one of the character of CHERRY TREE. [Lyrics] It's a brand new day Get a coffee anyway It's the order of the day Is the sun already up? Awa Sy) 曲:David Federmann, Awa Sy / 詞:David Federmann, Joseph Federmann This song is the story of a girl who can make everything she wants in her dreams: every night, she decides what she gonna do and who she gonna be. And since her dreams can take as far as she wants, sometimes the return to reality is a bit difficult... This song was inspired to David by his neighbor, a Malian woman named Babou who really has the ability to "program" her dreams. The interpretation was born from the meeting with Awa Sy who was then a waitress in a restaurant. David sees her and tells her that she looks like two drops of water to Left Eye (the singer of the American band TLC). Awa tells her from touch to touch that she is also a singer. The song was going to be recorded some close time later. Awa Sy joined "The Voice France" in the following months becoming than a famous French singer. [Lyrics] I like to dream, at night because I can be whoever I want do what I wish to do my nightmares are cool too my boyfriend hates, that situation because when I ask him to go to bed it's never for that sweet temptation but always for what's gonna be in my head What I wish to do If only I had known about it What I wish to do I wish I could have stayed that magnificent in the morning What I wish to do I wanna keep those green eyes What I wish to do As brilliant as in that dream, let me be that way even if it's unwise. Automatic, happiness seeker Down through the ages, throughout the world Set the alarm for one hour later Baby please take me at my word Beautiful counting rhyme Every night in every corners of the globe Snooze it one more time As I can fly, fly a little more What I wish to do If only I had known about it What I wish to do I wish I could have stayed that magnificent in the morning What I wish to do I wanna keep those green eyes What I wish to do As brilliant as in that dream, let me be that way even if it's unwise. Dream it The day I walk in town, the night I rule the world But each time a loved one passed away I was waiting for the night to meet again We danced and laughed through a shiny day The day I walk in town, please let me be that way 04. In Between 距離 (feat. Camille Delage) 曲:Chloé Traband, David Federmann, Camille Delage, Jean-Baptiste Coudert / 詞:David Federmann Like in a Jam session where you’ve got new musicians association on each track, on WATER’S EDGE that’s the same. Each song got its story, and its personnel. IN BETWEEN is the meeting of singer Camille Delage, guitarist Djib Coudert & myself. It was made in one night! I met Camille for the first time that evening. She was a friend of my partner. We went to restaurant, had dinner all together, great wine. I heard her beautiful voice while she was simply talking. I had the feeling, eyes closed, that I was in front of Sade. When we got back home it was very late, but as she was leaving Paris few hours later, it was now or never: I wrote the lyrics, I set up a chords progression and a tempo, and we made it straight away in one take. Djib was supposed to come on the early morning for a guitar session on another track. As I stood awake all night long working on Camille’s recordings, the first thing I asked Djib to do when he entered the studio was to improvise on that fresh new track. In my idea the guitar solo was supposed to last 30 seconds, as usual. But Djib made such a wonderful take that it was impossible to cut it anywhere. And here we are: the guitar solo starts at the half of the song and will never ever stop ! IN BEWTEEN, like 2 songs in 1. [Lyrics] I was right, you are not that soldier who was going to make us go through the storm Overseas ain't no express carrier to proclaim my love ain't no shortened form For that reason, I am starting to wonder On the high seas, things are not as they should be. Distance is just a space in between Chance is to see your name on my screen your hidden feelings, your shy words, please make it deeper baby please, baby please don't fall on your sword Anytime, anywhere 05. Ring Road 環狀線 曲:Chloé Traband, David Federmann / 詞:David Federmann [Lyrics] Let's go fast Before it's too late One hour left Is it a matter of fate Swirl of smoke And car radio You take the ring road No other way to go You are jumping Far into the night Mystically reflecting All the city lights One-way street Hypnotic trance You're dying with sleep But could you just give it a chance 06. 133 (feat. Valli) 曲:Valli Budestschu, David Federmann, Samuel Maingaud, Joris Coimbra / 詞:David Federmann This nearly 8-minute song is the longest song on WATER’S EDGE. It’s kind of a death-line trip / a trip along the border of death. But it’s a quiet & peacful exploration. It’s a portrait of a young girl who seems a little weird in the eyes of others. The singing voices are talking about her, but will also guide her. The mysterious voice that appears towards the end of the song - Valli’s voice - will reassure this young woman by guiding her towards the border of this new world. The song is co-performed with Valli Kligerman who formed, with Grégory Ken, the French star band "Chargin d'Amour". In 1982 they made the TOP-charted "Chacun Fait (c'qui lui plaît)". [Lyrics] When you dream about heaven It makes you wanna die You gotta feel the vibe But you will play it down Was the talk of the town You're inspiring jibes, cause you're a bit strange You gonna live at night And you gotta make it right You gotta bring me down Cause like a water sprite, you're a flood of light That's right When you dream about heaven Tt makes you wanna die You gotta feel the vibe But you will turn round You gonna let us play You gotta bring me down, tied and bound You gonna hold me tight And you gotta make it right you gonna reach the sky cause like a water sprite, you're a flood of light That's right When you dream about heaven It makes you wanna die Ask for the 7th destination But do it on the sly 'Cause if your mum sees you smiling She will keep you by her side A sense of hope abounds She ain't gonna cry On the high seas of loneliness I'll take you for a ride The curtain drops I swear I'll remember you As the one who reached the shores of a strange new land Let's go...
