1971年由主唱兼鼓手Don Henley、主唱兼吉他手Glenn Frey、貝斯手Randy Meisner、主奏吉他手Bernie Leadon四人組成的老鷹合唱團(The Eagles)在加州正式誕生，這個團名「老鷹」不僅是美洲原住民印第安人的守護使者，亦是美國文化的象徵。
老鷹合唱團具美國音樂承先啟後的地位，其優美的和聲上承Everly Brothers(艾佛利兄弟二重唱)、Beach Boys(海灘少年合唱團)、C.S.N.Y.以來的優良傳統；流暢的旋律與演奏為民謠/鄉村搖滾The Byrds(伯茲)、Buffalo Springfield(水牛春田)、The Flying Burrito Brothers等合唱團的延續，這些音樂特色影響了日後鄉村音樂的發展，九○年代之後像Garth Brooks、Tim McGraw、Restless Heart…等巨星或團體無不受老鷹合唱團的啟發。
就在樂團名氣如日中天同時，長期以來老鷹合唱團在錄音期間團員們的意見相左與對未來音樂方向的問題浮上?面：原吉他手Bernie Leadon與新音樂方向相行漸遠，並感到在樂團的地位越來越不重要，其實從「One Of These Night」專輯中的 "Journey Of The Sorcerer" 和 "I Wish You Peace" 這兩首Leadon的歌就可發現它們不僅被安排在專輯A、B兩面的最後一首，而且風格明顯與其他曲差異頗大，於是1975年底Bernie Leadon離團而去。老鷹合唱團趁此機會於1976年3月推出首張精選輯「Their Greatest Hits」整理出Bernie Leadon時期的10首暢銷曲。有些樂迷是從 "Best Of My Love" 拿下單曲冠軍後才開始接觸該團的音樂，所以「Their Greatest Hits」的發行也為樂迷們回顧了第一、二張專輯中那些當年被忽略的單曲。美國唱片協會(RIAA)於1976年開始認定專輯銷售突破一百萬張是為白金唱片，「Their Greatest Hits」由於首首都是嚴選每張專輯裡的代表作(如第二張專輯捨棄原單曲 "Outlaw Man" 而收錄標題曲 "Desperado" )，所以這張精選推出後不久便被認定為史上第一張白金專輯；經過25年的銷售，單在美國就賣出兩千八百萬張，也被RIAA宣佈為史上最暢銷的專輯。 看更多
