The leader Republic of Formosa, Tang-Sin Wu, fought the Japanese from the Taoyuan plateau to Bagua Mountain, which coincide with the only area where red clay earth can be found in Taiwan. By the time Wu and his men had reached Bagua Mountain, the majority of Formosan forces had been lost. The Japanese would continue their conquest of Taiwan in a two-pronged approach that covered both seaside and mountain settlements.
